A surf session is mostly paddling. For every wave you ride, you spend minutes pulling water with tired shoulders and an arched lower back. After a long morning in the water, the TimTam Pro3 is a practical way to work through tight lats, shoulders, and hips before the next session.
What Surfing Asks of the Body
The work comes in three parts. You paddle for endurance, sprint to catch a wave, and pop up in under a second. Then you balance on a moving surface using your legs and core.
Most surfers are limited by paddle fitness, not wave skill. Better shoulders and a better aerobic base mean more waves per session.
Build the Paddle Engine
Swimming is the closest match, and two or three sessions a week of easy laps builds the base. If you cannot get to a pool, rowing machines and band pulldowns carry over well. Add short sprint intervals of 15 to 20 seconds to mimic catching a wave.
Shoulders and Upper Back
Pull-ups, rows, and cable pulldowns build the muscles that drive the stroke. Pair them with face pulls and external rotations so the rear shoulder keeps up with the front. Train these twice a week with moderate loads and controlled reps.
Pop-Up Speed and Leg Strength
A fast pop-up is a push-up into a deep lunge, done in one motion. Practice it on land, with sets of five clean reps. Add squats, split squats, and single-leg balance work so the legs can absorb the board as it moves.
Before a dawn session, a cup of Patriot Brew and a light breakfast is an easy way to start. Bring water, since hours in sun and salt dry you out faster than you notice.
Core and Lower Back
Paddling holds the chest up while the lower back works against gravity. Planks, bird dogs, and back extensions keep that position sustainable. Add rotational work like cable chops for the turns.
Recover Between Sessions
Expect sore shoulders, a tight lower back, and tired legs after a big day. Rinse, eat a real meal, and stretch the chest and lats. Recovery is training, and surfers who sleep and eat well paddle stronger the next morning.
For steady daily support through a long season, the Vitality Bundle covers protein, omega-3s, BCAAs, and focus support. Build the shoulders, protect the back, and the waves will keep coming.
