Nordic Curls: Building Hamstrings That Hold Up to Speed

Hamstring strains are the most expensive soft-tissue injury in sprint-based sport — the most common, the most likely to recur, and the most likely to cost weeks at a time. They cluster in one place: late swing phase at high speed, where the hamstring is long, loading eccentrically, and decelerating the leg with more force than any gym lift asks of it. The Nordic curl exists to train exactly that. Why Hamstrings Fail at Speed

In the final phase of a sprint stride, the hamstring contracts while lengthening to brake the swinging leg before the foot strikes. The Nordic's reputation for brutal soreness comes from bad ramp-in, not from the exercise. The productive entry is small: two sets of three or four reps, once or twice a week, lowering only as far as control allows and using the hands to catch and push back up. Range grows before volume does. Within four to six weeks the soreness response fades — the repeated bout effect is nowhere stronger than in eccentric work — and the athlete is doing five to eight controlled reps with the chest drifting far past where it started.
