Sweat carries more than water out of the body, and sodium leaves in quantities large enough to change how an athlete feels and performs. Replacing fluid without replacing what came with it is where a lot of late-session decline and cramping starts.

Sweat is not water with a bit of salt in it. It carries sodium in the largest quantity by a wide margin, along with chloride, potassium, magnesium, and calcium in smaller amounts, and the concentration varies enough between people that two athletes running the same session in the same room can lose meaningfully different quantities. Sweat rate varies too, from under a liter an hour to well over two in heat. That range is why blanket advice about hydration tends to miss: the athlete who drinks to a schedule built for someone else is either behind or overcorrecting. What Sweat Actually Takes

Sodium dominates the losses, typically somewhere between 400 and 1,500 milligrams per liter of sweat depending on the individual. Potassium, magnesium, and calcium leave in far smaller amounts, which is why sodium is the one worth planning around and the others are mostly covered by ordinary eating. Sodium's job is to hold fluid in the extracellular space and support nerve signaling and muscle contraction. Drop the concentration far enough and the consequences run from flat, heavy legs through to genuine hyponatremia in long events where an athlete has taken on a large volume of plain water and replaced none of the salt.

Who Actually Needs to Replace It

A forty-five minute session in a temperate room does not require an electrolyte strategy. Food and normal drinking cover it. The athletes who need to think about it are the ones training over roughly ninety minutes, working in heat or humidity, running multiple sessions in a day, or losing salt at a high rate. Heavy salt losers are usually easy to identify by the white residue left on skin and clothing after a hard session, and by a history of cramping that does not track with conditioning. How Much, and When

Practical replacement sits in the range of 300 to 700 milligrams of sodium per hour during extended work, adjusted upward in heat and for known heavy sweaters. That can come from a formulated drink, from salt added to a carbohydrate mix, or from salted food in the case of very long efforts.
