Timed sprints are the standard speed test, and most sports almost never ask for one. The speed that decides plays lives in the cut — the moment an athlete arrives at full velocity, absorbs it, and redirects into a new line before anyone else can react. Straight-line training builds the acceleration half of that and leaves the harder half alone. The research is consistent that change of direction ability correlates poorly with linear sprint speed, which means the fastest athlete on the timing gates is not automatically the one who wins the cut. The Cut Is a Braking Problem
Analysis of direction changes keeps returning the same finding: the limiting factor is the deceleration, not the reacceleration. Training the Brake
The work that builds it is specific. Planned Versus Reactive
Closed drills with a known pattern build the mechanics, but sport does not announce the direction in advance.
